“The most powerful words in English are ‘Tell me a story.’”

— Pat Conroy

Hi, I’m Anne.

I grew up in Tampa, Florida. I attended Stratford Hall Preparatory School in Danville, Virginia, the University Georgia and the University of Florida. I married and lived in a rural town in Virginia and had two daughters, Rebecca and Jennifer. I moved back to Florida and founded a sandwich shop on Siesta Key in 1971 which became a famous hangout for writers and artists. I was a food editor of the Sarasota Journal.  In the seventies, I moved to western North Carolina and became the assistant manager of the newspaper in Franklin.  During this time, I wrote about the history of western North Carolina, a cookbook, and many regional stories. I sold my first piece of fiction to The Tropics, the style section of the Miami Herald.  I’ve attended many writing workshops including the University of Iowa Summer Workshop, Bread Loaf, and The Key West Literary Seminar.

I met Mary Morris at my last workshop, who was very enthusiastic about The Marsh Bird and encouraged me to finish the novel. During the past forty years, I’ve lived all over the country and traveled the world, often with my four grandchildren whom I adore. For a number of years, I lived in Ashland, Oregon where my younger daughter, Jennifer lives. I now live in Tampa, Florida where my older daughter, Rebecca lives.

I love life, particularly hiking, watercolors, nature - wherever - and writing.
